ITIL METHODOLOGY

Understanding ITIL methodology is very significant to its adoption. Every organization planning to adopt ITIL must have up-to-date knowledge on how ITIL works. ITIL is simple and it focuses on managing IT services of organizations, identifying the supply of IT needed for processes. In simpler terms, ITIL’s purpose is to ensure that IT services satisfy Organization objectives.

This entails the processes required for the planning and delivery of quality IT services, and also checks the long term processes associated improving the quality of IT services delivered to customers. It involves the following:

  Service Level Management

SERVICE SUPPORT

This describes the processes involved in the day-to-day support and maintenance activities involved in the provision of quality IT services. It includes the following:

  Change Management

  Release Management

  Problem Management

  Incident Management

  Configuration Management

  Service Desk

PLANNING TO IMPLEMENT SERVICE MANAGEMENT

This involves the examination of the issues and tasks involved in planning, implementing, and improving service management processes within an organization. It also addresses the issues involved in addressing cultural and organizational change, the development of a vision and strategy, and provides the most appropriate method of approach.

SECURITY MANAGEMENT

This part of ITIL methodology involves noting the process of planning and managing a well-defined
level of security for information and IT services within an organization. This also includes all aspects of security incidents, the assessment and management of risks and vulnerabilities. It also suggests the implementation of cost-justifiable measures.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT:

This entails all aspects of ICT infrastructure management from identification of business requirements through the procurement process, to the testing, installation, deployment, and ongoing operation and optimization of ICT components and IT services. It involves the following processes:

  Network service Management

  Operations Management

  Management of local processors

  Computer installation and acceptance

  Systems Management

THE BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE:

It provides guidance to help IT personnel understand how they can contribute to business objectives in their organizations. It also helps them know how their roles and services can be better aligned and making them a great asset to their organization.

APPLICATION MANAGEMENT:

This aspect of ITIL methodology describes how to manage applications from the initial business need through all stages in the application lifecycle, up to retirement. It emphasizes the need to ensure that IT projects and strategies are strictly aligned with those of the business through the application lifecycle. This is to ensure that business obtains the best value from its investment.
